I took a friend here to celebrate her birthday and honestly, it was the perfect setting for it. This Georgian coaching inn dates back to 1751 and has been lovingly run by the Phillips family since the 1980s, giving it that genuine, family-run warmth you just can’t fake. Step inside and you’re greeted with oak panelling, beamed ceilings and roaring open fires — properly atmospheric, the kind of place that feels steeped in history the second you walk through the door. But it’s the gardens that really stole my heart. The Hundred House has an award-winning working herb and kitchen garden with over 100 varieties of herbs, alongside home-grown fruit and vegetables that go straight from the beds to the kitchen. There’s even a “secret enchanted garden” to wander through before your meal, roses, herbaceous borders and all. It’s no wonder the restaurant has held two AA Rosettes for around 20 years — that’s some serious pedigree And the food itself? Cooked to perfection.
