IYKYK🥲. Let’s discuss ↓ Growing up with an emotionally immature parent often means the whole household runs on a single internal weather system: theirs. When they're calm, the house exhales. When they're not, everyone else adjusts. Nobody even has to say it out loud, everyone already knows the rules. This happens bc emotionally immature parents struggle to self-regulate. Their nervous system doesn't distinguish between "I'm irritated" vs. "I’m being unsafe " - so the two get transmitted as one signal... and children absorb both. Kids in these homes become skilled at hypervigilance and it's often mistaken later in life for 'being sensitive' or 'overthinking,' when really it was a survival skill built early on. Enmeshment tends to grow out of the same soil. When a parent can't hold their own emotions, a child gets recruited (consciously or not) into holding them instead. The child becomes the mood-manager, the peacekeeper, the one who senses a shift before it lands. Boundaries blur because there was never really a separate emotional space to have a boundary around. The child's job becomes: keep the parent regulated, keep the peace.... Walking on eggshells is the daily texture of this. 🌱🌱Some tools for healing this pattern: * Name what happened, specifically. Not just "my childhood was hard" but "I learned my needs came second to my parent's moods”. Specificity interrupts vague shame * Practice differentiation. This means learning to notice someone else's emotional state without automatically absorbing it as your job to fix. A useful internal line: = "their mood is real AND it isn't mine to manage" * Rebuild interoception. Years of monitoring someone else's internal state can disconnect you from your own. Small, regular check-ins (( "what am I feeling right now, in my body" )) rebuild that inward attention. * Give yourself permission to have needs that inconvenience someone. This is often the hardest one. And the most necessary. * Consider professional support. * The nervous system that learned to read a room can also learn, slowly, that it's allowed to just exist in one. note: none of this is framed as blame without nuance. Most emotionally immature parents were parented the same way & this is often generational. That being said, understanding the 'why' doesn't excuse the impact, but it can soften the self-blame that so many adult children carry.
