I teach English to adults in france, they're often traumatised by the way it's taught in schools and have been given the mentality of "it's better to not say anything than to make a mistake"

So I grew up in Romania, and our tv channels were mostly in English or with subtitles, or if you could watch German or Italian, in those languages. If I wanted to watch Scooby Doo, it was not dubbed on Cartoon Network. My grandma watched telenovelas before I could read so I would just watch in Spanish with her. These days kids programming is dubbed, but this is a relatively new development. By contrast, in many western European countries everything is dubbed, so kids have no need to learn. I had to understand English to watch Buffy, Spanish to watch telenovela with my grandma, and German to watch anime on RTL2. 😆

Honestly, I think it is harder for English speakers. English is the dominant international language of business, science, travel, politics, media… I’ve given up on Spanish, French and German because it really did require constant effort and everyone would reply in English. I’m learning Scottish Gaelic, a minority language, and it’s the first time I’ve regularly encountered a language passively and been met with enthusiasm for carrying out a conversation in a language I’m learning. Yes there are a heap of personal failings, but we need a societal level rethink on language exposure.

I think with English speakers having the world's lingua franca as your first language is quite possibly the worst thing to encourage learning of another language. If the people whose language you're trying to learn also speak English, if you mess up or can't think of the words, it's far too easy to just slip back into English. However, if your native language is only spoken in your own country and you want to travel outside it, monolingualism isn't really an option.

It’s possible that the French are worried about perfection due to the method that they learn their own language. French is extremely rule based and schools do not allow for the concept of “good enough”. English is very easy to learn but very difficult to master. A lot of native speakers didn’t even learn the rules since it’s more vibe based

In Bulgaria, it’s drilled into us from an early age that knowing more than one foreign language makes you a more valuable worker/person altogether. In my family, it’s almost competitive how many languages you can speak.

Learning another language in Britain needs to start much earlier - a lot of kids aren’t getting proper regular language lessons until secondary, which is too late and many can’t be bothered/don’t see the point in learning.

I have to wonder if the reason French people are so insecure about not being good enough at another language is because they putting so much pressure on themselves to preserve the French language or other's "correct" usage of the French language.

The problem is, most foreign language teachers in France are not native speakers of those languages. So they will pass on their dubious fluency to their students, who will carry it into their own lives. That’s probably why most French people are dismissive about learning foreign languages.
