A lot of weight gain is from lifestyle rather than genetics. Even in most genetic situations, lifestyle plays a huge role

Genetics play 0% role in weight gain or weight loss. It’s only muscle mass, exercise and diet. A.K.A. Calories in vs calories out.

NTA. Genetics play a very very very small part. Lifestyle is the biggest factor.

Neither are the a-hole but genetics does play a part in body weight, rue could live the exact same lifestyle as op and still not be stick thin or skinny which I think op was trying to get that point across but worded it very poorly

So its OK for these people to Skinny shame you BUT when you give it back You're the bad person. 😂😂😂 Time to quit these people who are NOT your friends at all. Some times so called 'Traditions' are more harmful then good.

being overweight is frustrating and painful, but it doesn't absolve you of accountability.
also, most people outgrow their highschool friends and don't even realize it, you just become different people over time. find new friends you actually like and enjoy.

being invalidated for all the hard work and effort you put into being healthy is really not cool. people need to take a look at themselves first before commenting on someone else

OP overstepped talking about Ru's body, not keeping the conversation about their own lifestyle. I am a gym bro but also a former fat. being ABLE to partake in an active lifestyle of ultra marathons and functional nutrition IS PRIVILEGE. However OP was feeling judged, and also patronizing of Ru.

hHm so it's ok for Ru to talk about op and her body, making assumptions and judging her, but when op responds, that's offensive. She needs better friends.

Antonia Ptak :
I'm having mixed feelings about that, because genetics do play a role, usually silently. Rue could have been doing the same as op and would not get the same result. So hearing "it's not genetics, it's efforts" feels reductive and judgy. That said, obviously, efforts and lifestyle matters, and it's terrible to hear people invalidate or reduce op's efforts.
The only thing I can advise op is trying to talk to Rue and do her best to clarify things, maybe ask her what she does and emphasize that there isn't one solution. If there seems to be really a wall, then at least op has tried.

They shouldn’t have tried to shame her for her food and body. They were trying to be morally superior.

Guarantee it was the way it was delivered. If everyone in the group feels that way, it was likely delivered in a way that crossed a line. Apologise privately and publicly, explain you love them all and it came out the wrong way but you felt backed into a corner over the negative comments on your eating and weight and you hope they understand why that caused your reaction. If they dont accept that time to move on from them

Truth doesn’t care about your opinion or feelings. If people don’t want to acknowledge your work, but judge you for the results they’re not your friends anymore. People see my car, my clothes, my vacation etc not my 60 hour weeks, the graveyard shifts, sleeping in my back seat, or the many years of living in a trailer. You don’t owe them anything.

Sounds like your friends have turned into Mean Girls over the years and have jealousy issues. It’s okay to walk away from long time friendships. Nostalgia is not a reason to keep friends. Speaking from experience here.

They're definitely talking behind her back and saw an opportunity to take their distances with her. Op, I experienced the same thing so believe me: they are not your friends!!

Most of the time its not what you say it’s the way how you say it. If everyone in the group considered you as rude I need to hear word for word what you said and how 💀
