Jennie nodded, or at least she thought she did. In reality, she wasn’t hearing a single word. She was too busy watching how Lisa’s eyes crinkled when she spoke, how the golden sunset light fell across her face, how her hands moved with such confidence and grace. Heels down. Reins soft. Don’t look at her lips. Don’t look at her lips. “Jennie?” Jennie jumped slightly, eyes snapping back to Lisa’s. “I — yes. Exactly. Heels. Down. Got it.” Lisa chuckled, clearly seeing right through her. “You haven’t listened to a single thing I’ve said for the last ten minutes, have you?” “Of course I have,” Jennie lied, her cheeks heating up. “I’m just… visualizing. Processing information. It’s a lot to take in.” “Sure it is,” Lisa said, but she was smiling. “Alright, let’s try again. Posture straight, shoulders relaxed.” Jennie tried. She really did. But every time Lisa stepped closer to adjust her position, guiding her shoulders or showing her how to hold the reins, Jennie’s mind went completely blank. All she could think was — God, she’s so beautiful. I could stay right here forever. I don’t need the city. I don’t need parties. Just… wherever she is. I’m straight, she reminded herself for the hundredth time that hour. This is just… admiration. Respect for skill. That’s it. The sun had dipped completely below the horizon by the time they finished. The sky was deep purple, dotted with the brightest stars Jennie had ever seen. The air was cool, and the only sounds were the horses munching quietly and the crickets starting their evening song. Lisa brushed dust off her hands and looked over at her. “Not bad for your first day. You’re a quick learner when you’re actually paying attention.” Jennie laughed softly, leaning against the fence. “Maybe I just have a really good teacher.” Lisa paused, then smiled — softer this time, quieter. “Thanks. I enjoyed it.” For a moment, neither of them said anything. Then Jennie’s heart started hammering against her ribs, and before she could overthink it, the words were out. “Lisa?” “Yeah?” Jennie took a breath, staring at the dark shape of the horse in front of them so she wouldn’t have to look her in the eye. “Do you… are you seeing anyone? Like… do you have a boyfriend?” There was a short pause. Then Lisa’s voice came, gentle and curious. “No. No boyfriend. Why do you ask?” Jennie’s fingers tightened around the fence rail. She took another breath, and this time she did look up, meeting Lisa’s eyes. “Or… a girlfriend?” Lisa blinks, a soft, gentle smile playing on her lips. “Oh. No, I don’t have a girlfriend either. I’m straight, Jennie.” The words land quieter than the crickets in the grass. Jennie’s chest does this strange, sharp little drop — like she’s just stepped off something higher than she realized. She nods quickly, plastering what she hopes looks like a casual, unbothered smile onto her face. “Oh. Right! Of course. Yeah, I just… y’know. Curious. Making sure you’re… not… taken. For… safety reasons. Or something.” She laughs, and it comes out way too bright, way too fast. Smooth. So smooth. Great, her mind supplies unhelpfully. She’s straight. Just like you.
