I’ve neglected you, and I’m sorry. Between festivals, events, barbecue, and of course the garden renovation, I completely forgot about my kebab reviews. So I’m putting that right, starting with my local: Marmaris Kebab, Flackwell Heath. One thing I’ve noticed recently is that delivery apps seem determined to show me restaurants 10 miles away. I know full well no delivery driver is going to want to pick that up and bring it to my house, so I’ve decided to stop relying on deliveries and just drive there myself. Honestly, it was a completely different experience. I was served straight away, had the food in my hands within 30 seconds, it was piping hot, packed securely, and actually made it home in one piece. It’s reminded me that sometimes the best upgrade to your takeaway isn’t the food—it’s cutting out the delivery. Now, onto the kebab. I ordered my usual large mixed meat kebab, because if I’m reviewing a kebab shop, that’s my benchmark. But I also wanted to show that Marmaris caters for both sides of the spectrum. If you’re after a proper Turkish mangal with grilled meats, they’ve got you covered, but if all you want is a classic doner after a long day, they do that just as well. Straight away I could tell they make an effort. The sauces are homemade, the salad isn’t just an afterthought, and there’s a bit of care shown to the vegetables rather than just chucking them in the box. Overall, I’d put Marmaris firmly into the Boss Man category. They’re not trying to reinvent the kebab, and that’s absolutely fine. The doner is competitively priced, while the grilled meats do start creeping up a little, but the quality is there to justify it. There’s nothing here that’s going to completely change your view of kebabs, but that’s not really the point. It’s a solid, reliable local that does the classics well, and I’m pretty lucky to have it right on my doorstep. #thekebabseries #donerkebab
