So please take a look on the fuses, even under the rear seat module box. The fuses contacts developing higher resistance over time when there‘s some corrosion after decades. Lost my E34 535i bc rear window defroster fuse started a fire.

I recomend also checking the blower motor for some leaves or debris

Thorough cleaning, new blower motor and 20A fuse instead of 30 makes you sleep better

Only on setting 1-3, on full blast, it bypasses the resister. On 4 it is receiving the full 12V. Just a little knowledge. On my old e34 I took it out because of my fear of causing a fire.

You said it started smoking when turning it up all the way, but wouldnt turning it up all the way bypass the resistor?

I think u wanna put some dielectric grease on the resistor before u put it in there.... But also if it's just the resistor the only symptom would have been the HVAC only working on high (4)

The original resistors are much better than any other. either convert it or use the old resistor (just clean it well).

The failed blower motor is probably the core reason why it started smoking. When the motor is worn out it doesn’t produce enough airflow to cool down the resistor and combined with the leaves inside the box that’s why it started smoking. Usually there is a thermal fuse but some people like to bypass it when it trips so they unintentionally create a fire hazard
