my ex wrote “i love your presents” instead of “your presence” in a card and it was enough to make me feel gross

i will admit there are some words i pronounced wrong for years due to having only ever read them and not heard them said aloud, but you bet your ass i could define them and use them in a sentance

there's a literacy crisis because of a broader cultural issue of not valuing education and not understanding the importance of reading at an early age. literacy. intelligence and literacy don't always equate. like you, words are deeply important to me. but why devalue someone who is different? my boyfriend likely wouldn't know all of these words. he is, however, a chemical engineer, musician, and a deeply kind individual. i promise you he knows words relating to his work that i don't, that you may not. we all have different knowledge. sending no hate or anger at all, just something to consider. you are obviously a deep thinker and kind person so i was kinda surprised by this take.

How much do you want to bet, that the same men are the ones who say “ if you’re in the US you should speak English” or something along that line?

Ok fuchsia is messed up cause not everyone knows it by that color. Many know fuchsia as a neon pink or even bright pink or maybe even hot pink. Some worlds are understandable because many know them as other names. Especially when you’re talking about colors. Specifically coquelicot like that’s just red.

this topic is important and I can understand the importance of being literate, but let’s let’s keep in mind that you use the example of asking your mother how to pronounce a word quickly and you had that available to you is because she was a native English speaker. I’m not saying people with non-native English speaking. Parents cannot succeed, but it does mean that they do not have the same accessibility to reading and pronouncing the English language correctly. Another important factor to keep in mind that many parents did not teach the importance of literacy to their children. Therefore, they can leave them behind even as they become adults. Yes, it is an adult responsibility to change that as they become adults but let’s keep in mind that many children who did not have unlimited resources have grown to adult to also do not have unlimited resources and time to catch up on books. In this day and age being able to continuously learn and read is difficult for a lot of people and not necessarily something they can do on their day today. Let’s make sure we get to the root of the problem which can often be the fact that literacy resources are not available to all students in America.

Like don’t get me wrong, I understand needing to hear it or needing context to know what a word is, especially if it’s not spelt the way it sounds but COME ON PEOPLE
