This is a very Esther Perel perspective, but it is not the only perspective. What the relationship requires is novelty and you can get that by creating distance, but you can also get that by seeking deeper more vulnerable sexual interactions with each other, which is also a kind of normal.

Esther Perel draws the same conclusions in her book Mating in Captivity. You have summarised one of her chapters succinctly.

Short answer? Both people aren’t working to keep the spark. Try new things. Have fun. Keep dating each other

My 30 year marriage is full of passion. Sparks EVERYWHERE. We do everything together and change in front of each other daily- this message is a huge over generalization- it is not factual for everyone. People in midlife- deal with your hormones and keep the spark alive.

30 years here. Great advice. I would say also become a little less available once in a while. I don’t mean to make your first jealous, but just make them wonder.

Because “the spark” is a smokescreen. It’s an illusion. It’s not real! You’ll spend the rest of your life chasing “the spark” and it’ll continue to disappear until you learn the lessons

More and more people are realizing you don’t have to live together. It’s impossible to not settle into more of a roommate scenario when you live together, but living separate lives (together) really help keep things interesting.

Food for thought. I’ve been with the same person since I was 19. I didn’t realize being inseparable wasn’t necessarily good. Something I’ve to realize as I’ve aged.

agree 100% with this and I think the challenge is communicating it in a way that doesn't feel like you're creating distance to avoid the person or their habits, but rather making a game out of "missing" each other 🔥

I thibk the spark lives in the little things. the things that are mine. the way he holds a glass... I know that grip. the little noises he makes upon entrance... mine. you never know everything about your partner but the willingness to keep choosing to reach for more. see more. finding some novelty in familiarity is a choice.

I have been with my husband for 15 years and it is as good, if not way better than it has ever been. we still want each other just as much and still manage to find new things to try all the time 🤷

My wife stopped desiring me after the birth of our first child and didn't reappear until 16 years later after I finally stopped trying to initiate altogether so this makes sense.
