My guess has always been they were on and off again in highschool, got married in secret/no one was cool enough to attend their wedding, had the "maybe a baby will fix our marriage," mentality, and Hades left when Mal was very little and unable to remember much about him, hence why she thought he was just some human. Then she and Evie finds out Hades is her dad sometime after/because of the Jewelbuliee from Wicked World

My leading theory is all of the original villains new just not the villain kids. The kids are both the heroes and the villains they did not know and the only one who told was Evie, and I feel like the only reason why maleficent and Hades was not more known on the aisle it simply because of the fact is she threatened any and everybody who had that knowledge Argo the villains

I think it kinda like Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Freb. where his wife and him got a divorce and his wife had rights to his daughter. But they acted like they were mortal enemies. And it most likely they were just terrified of Maleficent not that they believe they were not married and he not being Mal father it was just like "yeah just like your mom says he human" And when they are on the Isle the Heros might not know and care what Villains did on the Isle. The Villains were more they were terrified of Maleficent

I feel like culturally in the isle marriage wasn't a thing especially those who defeated them their protagonist of their stories were defeated by happily ever after couples more equality between female and males after all Maleficent the Evil Queen Lady Tremaine etc they had somewhat henchmen but they themselves did the job
