Some background information for people who are NOT familiar with this music. Robert Miles’ “Children” is an instrumental song that captures feelings of innocence, nostalgia and melancholy. The gentle piano melody has an almost childlike, lullaby quality, while the steady electronic beat creates a sense of movement and reflection. The contrast between the beautiful melody and its slightly sad tone can feel like looking back on childhood from adulthood and recognising that innocence does not last forever. Without lyrics, the music allows each person to attach their own memories and emotions to it. For me, the song feels like a reminder of childhood, vulnerability and the people or moments we wish we could hold on to.
