I took my jet boat a few years ago when it was still at capt Ron’s and it was terrifying at times navigating to and from the airbnb which was less than a mile from the shootout. Definitely a big boat only event.

Imagine a small child falls over, hurt their knee, and, without a second thought, runs into their parents' caring arms. There's no shame. There's no calculation. They just run to somebody that they know will be there to help them. The Japanese psychoanalyst Takeo Doi called this ‘amae.’ It's the wish to depend on another person, to be indulged, and to be looked after, and to trust that they will let you. In a lot of the Western tradition, we see dependence as a kind of weakness. From the rationalising Greeks to the liberty-loving John Locke, we see self-reliance as the ultimate virtue. Stand on your own two feet and ask nothing of anybody. That's the only way to be strong. But Doi says that his culture sees things differently here. Asking people in the right way, at the right time, for help is not a sign of weakness. It's the only way that we can bind ourselves to other people, and the only way we can find meaning in our lives. Because a life without amae is a lonely one. If you can never let your guard down and never be cared for, if you can never be the child who runs into the loving arms of a parent, then you can never find rest. You will always see other people as transactional agents. To love someone is to partially let them depend upon you. And to love somebody else is to depend upon them. Sometimes the bravest thing in life is not to stand on your own two feet. Sometimes it is to let yourself fall over in the knowledge that somebody is there to help you, to pick you up, and to take you in.
