The fact that they wanted to out her as some type of uncouth gold-digger is so petty of them! I bet that the mom wanted to humiliate OP more than actually wanting to go to Japan so she organized a trip to Japan to do this insane stunt (Dad’s just along for the ride and BF gets an international trip out of it) and if OP said her dream trip was Greece, they’d do the same thing (hiring an interpreter, gush about the itinerary, etc)
