New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has unveiled a proposed law banning under-16s from using social media. Under the latest proposal, platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook will have to take steps to check that users are over 16 and platforms that fail to meet their obligations could face substantial fines. Luxon said social media was exposing children to "harmful content, addictive technology and pressures they are not equipped to deal with". However, the bill hasn't yet attracted enough support to pass into law because two of the three parties in Luxon's coalition government will vote against it.
