Are we talking about pericarditis or pancreatitis?

My dogs last lab work was a little off. The vet prescribed a royal canine prescription diet but I don’t care for the ingredients. I normally buy her food at a small shop that carries healthier options. They recommended Square Pet. The ingredients are way better. My sisters dog is 16 and she was diagnosed with pancreatitis years ago. I’ll find out what she feeds her and share with you.

Kibble is a safe bet because it’s perfectly formulated for your dogs, but I like to add lean fresh foods too. People will always have something to say about what you’re feeding, so listen to your vet, gut, and dog!

my dog had pancreatitis as well and I have PTSD from it I'm pretty sure. I feed the same hills and probiotic. I mix it will a farmina weight management food as well. I think if you focus on keeping the fat % low. I made the mistake of giving my dog a bit of Costco rotisserie chicken. 🥹

I give mine raised right frozen food. It’s low in fat. My dog has the same thing and since I put her on this food she has been amazing. I hope this helps.

My cousin who is a vet and the craziest dog lover out there highly recommends Purina pro plan and to stay away from the "boutique brands" but also recommends the brand

My 11 year old Yorkie has had pancreatitis and we've ended up at the emergency vet. Since switching her to Hills Digestive Care small bites 2 years ago, she had been doing well. My vet said stay away from giving her protein as treats or snacks. I've attached pics of the only treats she gets with the occasional bite of apple or a blueberry. She's out baby so I know how you feel! I was making her dog food and she stuff got sick. Glad we finally found something that works for her. Good luck!

I hope your doggy is okay! You are an amazing dog mommy. We use purina pro plan and Nom Nom as a topper (as a clean girly who hates cooking because it gets the kitchen dirty lol. It is also easy to travel with.) Highly recommend!

We are currently going through this right now! My dog was in the ER two times last week. Absolutely terrifying. He is 11 years old and this is never happened. I am waiting for my prescription dog food to arrive, but we are using Royal canine low-fat gastrointestinal. Just wanted you to know there are other pancreatitis options out there for prescription if your little guy doesn’t like it. My dog would not even come near the hills can low-fat the ER doctor gave us. He has been on boil chicken breast and sweet potato for seven days. He has also on gabapentin for the pain and his anxiety… Poor guy. I know what you mean about the guilt. We just lost our 15 year-old border collie a few months ago and I think we’ve been over feeding this guy because he seems so sad and given him table scraps when we shouldn’t have. You’re doing a great job. Also, if your dog likes broccoli, I have given my dogs, the frozen rice, broccoli, and then steamed it and mixed it in, which has been helpful with developed fiber.

my dog has this ... or he has EPI which is Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. he takes an enzyme mixed with all his wet food and he only eats hydrolyzed dog food. we were cooking for him but he got super vitamin deficiency. he couldn't eat a complete diet with his allergies. so hydrolyzed kibble it is 🤷‍♀️but now his tummy is so good!

I know dog food is highly controversial. But I feed raw or slightly cooked. I would never feed kibble which I know people please don’t come for me. I would highly recommend doing research from Dr. Karen Becker and Dr. Judy Morgan. I buy premade raw and slightly cooked because making sure a diet is complete isn’t the easiest. The Forever Dog and the Forever Dog Life books are great resources. I don’t have children. My dogs are my everything and raising my dogs holistically is my passion. I don’t like cooking either. I only cook for my dogs. lol. My dogs get acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy, laser and massage. I have a 13 year old 92 pound rescue and a 3 year old Great Dane. I hope your fur babies are doing well!!!!

As a vet- please listen to your vet. People in the comments are acting like this is just an upset stomach. It is not. Pancreatitis requires a medical grade low fat diet. If you want to add some human foods, I would urge you to ask your vet for a referral to a BOARD CERTIFIED veterinary nutritionist (ACVN), who is the ONLY person qualified and that you should trust to formulate a diet for your specific pets needs.

German Shepherd mom here. We feed Dr Harvey’s dehydrated blend and add 1/2 lb of meat (he’s 60 lbs - always rotate meats) coconut oil for fat and pure pumpkin purée for GI health. Pretty expensive overall (good quality meat is not cheap) but he’s incredibly healthy.

you can give him steamed chicken breast and rice to let his tummy and pancreas settle down. In Australia we have a brand of food called science Diet that I had to give my dog that had pancreatitis, dry food and can food. thats all she could have never anything else.. instead of a bone she had to have a carrot! 😤🙄 hopefully you can get something similar to the brand science diet over there my dog Daisy never got sick again.. good luck. I feel for u its so stressful xo ❤️

Hills and Purina dog foods are 2 of the best things you can feed them. Don’t let the marketing from boutique dog foods fool you. Hills and Purina have years and years of science and research behind them. Veterinarians recommend them for a reason.

That prescription food has been excellent for my dog with IBD/recurring pancreatitis. She gets 50% of the ID small bites and 50% home cooked food. My girl gets steamed rice, carrots, green beans, lean pork loin, chicken and the balanceit supplement. The vet nutritionist from University Of Georgia vet recommended it! Adding a supplement is very important if you cook home cooked!
