I can confirm that this happened to me too, except worse. I had them on my treadmill and they literally melted my treadmill and were so stuck. Nothing was left on them, I was in shock.

Cheap neoprene material that degrades with humidity and sweat, so like sitting on a shelf in Florida unused can do this. When the neoprene traps that moisture is blends with the rust of the metal weight under it, and creates that sludge. Don't buy covered weights.

If it's a certain kind of silicone, I know that they can melt while touching certain other plastics/silicones. it's a weird reaction
