I’m currently writing an enemies-to-lovers story between Little Puma and Margareth Rose Whitmore, set in the American West during the 19th century. Margareth is the daughter of settlers who arrive in the West seeking a new life, while Little Puma belongs to the Indigenous people whose land is being threatened by the settlers’ arrival. To him, Margareth represents everything he has been taught to fear: colonization, displacement, and the destruction of his home. At first, he forces himself to hate her, trying to convince himself that she is his enemy. But the more he gets to know her, the more he realizes that she is nothing like the image he had created of her. His hatred slowly turns into curiosity, respect, desire, and eventually love. Meanwhile, Margareth must confront everything she was taught about Indigenous people and realize that the land she believed was waiting for her family already had a history, a people, and a home. But loving each other comes with consequences. Their families, cultures, and the conflict between settlers and Indigenous peoples stand between them. In the end, theirs is a love story about two people who were never supposed to meet, falling in love in a world that would never allow them to do so easily.
