You have to be ripped and pure muscle for bmi not to work for you. At that point in a fitness journey you should know that it's a tool and to use it or not

Nothing is more annoying than people claiming being overweight or obese isn’t unhealthy. It absolutely is!!

NP here. We absolutely use BMI to help guide determining when and what to screen for. It’s not perfect but we KNOW risk for negative health outcomes increases as BMI increases.

So true. When I was heavier, I used to think the scale was BS also… Until I actually got into shape and now miraculously I am right on the money… 6 foot 175 pounds, and my wife did the same… She’s 5 foot 109 pounds…… right on the money according to the scale.

He gotta remember people on this app aren’t so bright, I heard a influencer yesterday, trying to explain how counting calories to lose weight is outdated

I honestly think the BMI scale gets wonky in the overweight category. Obesity is almost always someone that needs to lose weight. I know several people who have sub 15% body fat and are in the overweight category.

Everytime this comes up, people say “I’m xyz and it says I’m obese”. Then I google it and it says they’re squarely in a normal weight range. What do people get from lying about their BMI? lol

it is not common to have enough muscle mass for your bmi to be meaningfully overestimated and people use that as an excuse all the time

I feel like common sense needs to be involved here. If the person is noticeably muscled, the BMI is probably going to be off. For most people, it's pretty accurate. 🤷♀️

“Experts have also pointed out that BMI fails to take into account factors such as how much fat versus muscle a patient has, the distribution of fat in their body (typically, fat around the waist increases disease risk more than fat in other places), and their metabolic health.” https://hsph.harvard.edu/news/bmi-a-poor-metric-for-measuring-peoples-health-say-experts/

Credible ethical professionals also don’t use terms like “you’re probably obese”. “We respectfully encourage people-first language as a requirement for manuscripts published by the Journal, which is one of the premier journals in nutrition. Establishing this specification would create more consistency in language, further eradicate weight bias, and improve the health outcomes of all individuals with obesity.” https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6248480/

I think it’s also important to remember that people look at athletes, such as forwards in rugby, or the larger players on an American football pitch (I don’t know what you call them) and assume that because they are athletes, they are healthy. In most cases the really big players have an unhealthy amount of fat on them. They might have a large amount of muscle, but that doesn’t make them healthy. Eddie Hall nearly died competing because of the size he was.

“BMI has important limitations. It does not account for how much body fat a person has—or where that fat is located. As a result, it can miss people at increased health risk while mislabeling others who are metabolically healthy. To address this, an international group of experts proposed a new definition in January 2025, published in The Lancet and endorsed by more than 75 medical organizations. The updated framework combines BMI with three other clinical measures, including:
Waist circumference
Waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios
Evidence of weight-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, or abnormal cholesterol levels” https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/what-does-the-new-definition-of-obesity-mean-to-you
