In the Iliad he cuts his hair and lays them on Patroclus body before the ritual telling everybody how Peleus made him do an oath with the God of the river that cross Phtia:he will stop cutting his hair and once he's back home safe he will donate them to God. He is telling everybody that he broke his oath cause he's not going back,his existence ends with Patroclus and everyone is brought to tears

in the iliad patroclus’ spirit makes achilles swear that their bones will be buried together and achilles refuses to eat, sleep nor drink anything until hector is dead and patroclus is given a proper burial.
