I spotted this fire from my lookout after lightning struck a tree waaaaaaaaay before the ai detection system or cameras could even see it!!! Of course technology is an incredible tool and I’m all for using it to help us detect fires faster. But there are some things technology can’t replace: a person with eyes and a brain physically watching the landscape, 360° around them all day long. Someone who knows the terrain, recognizes what belongs and what doesn’t, and can rely on experience and historical knowledge of the landscape to identify something out of place. Early detection means getting the right information to the right people as quickly as possible. I know that firsthand. I believe that first set of eyes should always belong to a human.
