NASA’s tiny PREFIRE satellites have now captured two full years of temperature changes across the Arctic and Antarctic, showing their opposite seasonal rhythms in motion. When the Arctic warms into summer, Antarctica falls into winter, and six months later they trade places. But PREFIRE is measuring something we couldn’t comprehensively see from space before: far-infrared heat escaping Earth. That invisible energy is a major part of the planet’s energy budget, and tracking it helps scientists understand changes in sea ice, snow, clouds and ice sheets and improve weather and climate forecasts. Which is pretty wild considering the satellites doing it are about the size of shoeboxes!
