Its homes weren’t simply built next to the mountain—they were carved directly into volcanic rock formations. Some of these homes have multiple levels, and some are still inhabited today. The strange rock formations were created from volcanic materials associated with Mount Sahand, while erosion gradually shaped them into the distinctive cone-like structures that define Kandovan’s landscape.
