*okay not TECHNICALLY quicksand, but as good as. At a casual glance mudflats do sometimes look like sand, but if you’re actually paying attention, you can tell the difference pretty easily. If in doubt… stay off! It’s not worth your life to FAFO. The mud is actually silt, ground up by passing glaciers and then washing down to the sea. It’s the shape of the grains of silt that makes them behave as they do. Occasionally people who get stuck in the mud do manage to extricate themselves. They are incredibly lucky. If you get stuck or think someone else is stuck, call 911 for help IMMEDIATELY. There is equipment that can extricate them, but it takes time to get there and to do its job. We have some of the most extreme tidal differentials in the world. At low tide, the water often seems like it’s gone far away, and I suspect that’s part of what draws people out onto the mudflats… then the tide comes in farther and faster than they imagined. Again, it’s not worth your life to FAFO. Hang out on the beach, or just come back another time, and the water will come back to you. I’d been thinking of posting this for a long time, and hesitating, because there are people out there still grieving because their loved ones died this way - drowning as the mud held them under the incoming tide. But there aren’t very many warning signs about the mudflats, and this is something people really should know.
