@kporter.stuff: Rrubber compression spring can outlast metal in vibration-heavy, high-cycle applications, but only if compression set is managed within the material’s safe range. Material-specific design decisions like this are exactly what we work through inside The Engineering Exchange. 🙌🏼⚙️ #MaterialsScience #MechanicalEngineering #ProductDesign #TheEngineeringExchange

I am surprised you didn’t mention the problems with cold temperatures and excessive heat issues. But that’s why they called me after the space shuttle exploded due to excessive cold temperatures on rubber

I hear rubber and I think tree, but then you describe it as a compound. what is it's tech name?

I just speced some urethane die springs a few weeks ago. McMaster had them. I didn't even know they existed. I love running across new solutions.

Is any of this stuff taught in an engineering class or is this on the job training?

Heavy industries/auto tuners prefer urethane springs theyre better abrasion resistance, resist oil degradation, heat, higher load capacity & longer lifespan than rubber.

if any type of oil is introduced, it loses elasticity

British Leyland used rubber cones for suspension in some of the earlier models. Compact, self limiting travel, an built shock absorber by the nature of the rubber absorbing vibrations. Had one some 45 years ago, and it had amazing handling. Apparently they would go hard after several years
