EMMA-JAYNE MAGSON – FOUND GUILTY OF MURDER AFTER A RETRIAL, BUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THAT NIGHT? The case of Emma-Jayne Magson became one of the most complex and controversial domestic homicide cases to come before the British courts. At its centre was the death of 26-year-old James Knight, who lost his life outside the Leicester home he shared with Magson in March 2016. Magson was convicted of his murder later that year. But years afterwards, that conviction was overturned and a retrial ordered after new evidence concerning domestic abuse and Magson's mental health was presented. The second jury would ultimately reach the same conclusion. So what happened on the night James Knight died? THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED During the early hours of 27 March 2016, an argument developed between Magson and Knight at their home in Leicester. Their relationship had been turbulent, and evidence about what had happened between the couple previously would later become extremely important. During the confrontation, Knight suffered a single fatal injury. But what happened afterwards became a major part of the prosecution case. Rather than immediately obtaining emergency assistance, Magson initially left Knight outside the property. She later contacted emergency services. By the time medical assistance arrived, James could not be saved. He was just 26. THE FIRST INVESTIGATION Leicestershire Police launched a major investigation into the circumstances surrounding Knight's death. Magson maintained that she had acted while defending herself. The prosecution presented a different picture. The case eventually reached Leicester Crown Court, where jurors had to determine whether Magson's actions amounted to murder or whether her account of self-defence created reasonable doubt. In November 2016, the jury found her guilty of murder. Magson was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years. For many cases, that would have been the end of the story. But this case was far from over. QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP Following Magson's conviction, campaigners and legal representatives began looking more closely at her relationship with Knight. They argued that important evidence concerning domestic abuse had not been properly understood during the original proceedings. Magson claimed that she had experienced years of controlling and abusive behaviour. Her supporters argued that the events of that night couldn't properly be understood without examining the history of the relationship. Questions were also raised about Magson's mental health and how it may have affected her behaviour and responses. A NEW LEGAL CHALLENGE The case was eventually taken to the Court of Appeal. Magson's legal team presented new psychiatric evidence and argued that the original jury had not been given the complete picture. In July 2020, the Court of Appeal overturned her murder conviction. But the judges did not declare Magson innocent. Instead, they ordered a retrial. That distinction was crucial. The question of what happened to James Knight would now be considered by another jury, this time with additional evidence available. THE RETRIAL In 2021, Magson returned to court. The second trial examined the relationship between Magson and Knight in considerably greater detail. Jurors heard evidence about allegations of domestic abuse and controlling behaviour.
