There are actually two versions of the dead internet theory. The first, classic version says that the internet is now predominantly made up of bots and fake accounts. And so, when you think you are talking to a real human being, the chances are you are actually talking to a bot. But the second version is more subtle, and perhaps more interesting. This version asks why it is that no one talks like a real person when they are online. This is true of LinkedIn, obviously, but on all of the major platforms, people comment, post, and message in this strange and unreal form of communication. We say that we are 'humbled and honoured', and that we are 'thrilled to announce'. We tell strangers to 'do better', and that they should 'make it make sense'. Nobody ever talks like this around the dinner table. In 1981, the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard argued that modern media often presents a simulacrum of the world it says it represents. And so, today, on the internet, our comments, our messages, and our posts no longer reflect any kind of normal reality. They reflect a world constructed by the bots and the fake accounts that dominate the online space. And so, even if we were to find another human being, we would interact with them in a way that matches the simulacrum, and not as how normal human beings talk. And so, we find ourselves trapped using this uncanny, surreal online language. We behave in a way that matches the internet, and not how we actually want to. We find ourselves trapped in a dead internet.
