Have you heard of the SUPER GENERATION of monarch butterflies?! During the fall, this long-living generation of eastern monarchs fly 4,800km (3,000 miles) from south eastern Canada to the mountains of Central Mexico. They can outlive and outfly their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents because of their reproductive diapause, which basically pauses reproductive development thus extending their lifespan! Once these super monarchs arrive in Mexico, they hibernate throughout the winter by huddling up with fellow butterflies on the branches of oyamel firs. In the late winter, they awaken and become fully developed so they get busy with feeding and mating. Then, they head north to start their migration back to Canada! Along the way North, they stop to lay eggs on milkweed plants to start the next generation of monarchs in the multi-generational migration. It takes three generations of monarchs to make it back to Canada! Once in Canada, the cycle repeats itself where the super generation will fly all the way back down to Mexico! Monarch butterflies face many threats such as habitat loss, deforestation, pesticides, and clim ate change. If you’d like to help monarchs, consider planting milkweed and/or native flowers with lots of nectar, and avoid the use of pesticides.
