U.S. CATTLE REPORT 🔔 Feedlot Placements Down Nearly 2.4 Million Head as Cattle Stay on Feed Longer and Carcass Weights Approach Peak According to Derrell Peel, the latest USDA Cattle on Feed report showed feedlot inventories at 11.372 million head, slightly below a year ago, with September marketings down 6.6% and placements down 12.1%, reaching a record low for the month. Feedlot placements have declined sharply since January 2025, falling from a monthly average of 1.856 million head to 1.656 million over the past 12 months, a 10.8% decrease representing nearly 2.4 million fewer cattle placed annually. Despite the decline, average feedlot inventories have fallen just 1.26% because cattle are staying on feed longer and being marketed more slowly. The monthly marketing rate has dropped from 15.5% to a record-low 14.0%, contributing to substantially heavier carcass weights. Peel noted, “Average steer carcass weights are up 76 pounds since 2023, with heifer carcasses up 66 pounds. Carcass weights appear to be topping out.” The latest weekly data showed steer carcass weights just 7 pounds above a year ago, the smallest year-over-year increase since February 2024.
