Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s push to win over skeptical voters produced a remarkable exchange Monday night, when he asked Fox News host Jesse Watters whether he was circumcised during a debate over gender-affirming care for minors. Watters had pressed El-Sayed on whether he supports transition surgeries for people under 18, asking whether it was acceptable for a parent to “slash his kid’s ding-a-ling off.” El-Sayed, a physician and former public health official, responded: “Are you circumcised?” After Watters said yes — and called it “a personal question” — El-Sayed noted that circumcision is also surgery on a child’s genitals. Watters pushed back that “circumcision’s different than castration” and later called El-Sayed’s position “wacky.” El-Sayed did not directly say whether he supports transition surgeries for minors, instead arguing that government should not dictate what health care people receive. El-Sayed is a progressive who ran to the left of the Democratic establishment and faces concerns about whether he can win in a battleground state like Michigan. The nearly 30-minute interview offered a preview of El-Sayed’s broader general-election strategy against Republican Mike Rogers: venture into conservative media and try to portray culture-war fights as distractions from pocketbook issues.
