My aunt hasn’t had a job since she got married in 2019. It was later revealed that her marital family doesn’t allow their makotis to have any kind of job and expects them to solely serve the household. Her mother-in-law never worked either, so it seems to be a pattern affecting the makotis in that family.

The whole changing of names is where the issue starts because why are you leaving your family? They are the reason you’re here. A marriage should be a partnership where no one should give up their identity for it. I understand the lesson here but something needs to change going forward. Kwamele kube nob’hlobo and not control you know what I mean. Everyone needs each other to extend lineages but not through overshadowing a persons identity.

I'm not sure how it works because in Sesotho you do not change clan names eg ke Mohlakoana and my children can be Bakuena but I will never be referred to as such according to my culture.so which part of me would be taken into the marital clan 🥹

I think most northern cultures cover this topic when the bride is being introduced in the family, by other married women. I know the term in Sepedi though "If they practice witchcraft you practice with them". What about when you divorce verbally, but you don't do any ceremony to show the ancestors you have separated with their child? What happens when you die, do you go with your family or his family?
