@melissadivaristhompson: I used to watch couples do this in session every week. One partner finally works up the nerve, picks their moment, and opens with the sentence they rehearsed in the car. Thirty seconds later both people are defending themselves and nobody remembers the original point. The hard part is that the partner who spoke up usually did everything right except the opener. The opener blamed them, so they defended themselves. That happens every time. What works better is smaller and less satisfying to say. You name one specific moment instead of a pattern. You name your own feeling instead of their failure. You make one ask that fits inside a single evening. It can feel like you’re shrinking the problem, and in a way you are. You’re shrinking it to a size your partner can respond to tonight instead of a list of everything that’s gone wrong. In the video I give you the exact three sentences, word for word, so you can try it this week. If this is the conversation you keep almost having, my 30 Day Relationship Reset Challenge was built for you. Thirty days of small, doable moves that change how the two of you talk to each other, starting with exactly this skill. It starts soon, and everything you need is at the link in my bio. 💗#relationshipadvice #couplescommunication #marriageadvice #pursuerwithdrawer #healthyrelationships This is relationship education, not therapy, and nothing here creates a therapist-client relationship. I read what I can, but I can’t reply to everyone and may not see your message. If you’re struggling, please reach out to a licensed mental health professional in your area💗

The problem starts within that other person’s head before it even comes out of your mouth.

This reminds me of Nonviolent Communication. That involves stating what you observed (objective), how it made you feel, what you need, an ask

if it starts with "you always" or "you never" the conversation isnt going to go well.

Do men ever try to keep the connection close when life gets in the way?

The last big discussion we had: I delivered my concerns on huge fluffy pillow… I could see his jaw working before I got the 1st sentence out. He listens to defend, not to understand

Honestly - if ninja mind games are required to be heard as a human being ... approaching the conversation is the least of my concerns.

HOWEVER - with emotional abuse sustained from a dissmive avoidant with childhood traumas, the rehearsing the conplaint in advance is to avoid more damaging abuse. Sinilar tactic, different reason, and for survival of the abusive relationship.

Ok even if does work but can you imagine how exhausting it is to plan that much for a small regular moment.
