One Shoulder Barbell Stepping Intervals for Cardio (335 lbs). So yes, I DO do cardio training. This is the type of cardio training that I do as the weather gets colder and I move to all indoor training. When the weather is good, I do long distance loaded carry training outside for cardio. To keep up with the loaded cardio indoors, I do a lot of rack-based stepping with a barbell. In this case, I'm doing shallow stepping for 30 second intervals onto a Step platform with a safety squat bar on one shoulder. This great cardio AND it challenges the legs, back and core very effectively. If you want to try rack-stepping, I would recommend you start with the bar on your back as normal and the Step in front of you. Get a feel for that first (I can send you a link to see, if you're interested). Now for this, you CAN use a regular straight bar for single shoulder work but the balance on the shoulder is tougher and you have to adjust your body position more to compensate, so it limits how much weight you can use. With the SS Bar, it's perfect for one shoulder work. It has the padding built right onto it. As well, the offset of the bar means you set it so that the load is held on one shoulder but the actual center of mass of the weight is more centered on your body. This gives you the benefits of single-side training while allowing you to keep better balance and maximize weight used. I have the bar set in the rack oriented just like you would for squats. Then just tuck your shoulder under the back pad, hold the handle in front and you're pretty well locked in. When you look towards the end of the bar, it should be almost directly in front of you due to the offset. Underneath the Step platform, I've got a 45 lb bumper plate. This reinforces the platform so that I don't break it with heavier loads. For regular stepping, I've used up to 500+ lbs with this setup, no problem. I do 30 seconds on one shoulder, switch the Step to the other side (takes about 30 seconds), then 30 seconds on the other side. Rest 1 minute, then repeat. #madscientistofmuscle #cardio #loadedcardio #metcon #metabolicconditioning #steptraining #heavycardio
