Ben MA :
Maybe this is because, as a multicultural society, we have to respect the dietary requirements of minority communities, especially halal requirements & the avoidance of pork.
I can feel the change quite clearly in our supermarkets & food options. At NTUC, for example, there seem to be more & more chicken based processed products - chicken sausages, chicken patties, frozen chicken, & so on - many of them halal certified, while pork options seem to be getting fewer over the years.
I fully understand the need to respect different communities & provide halal choices. But at the same time, I sometimes wonder : where is the balance when it comes to the choices & needs of the majority ?
Especially when the cost of living is already high, having fewer non-halal options can sometimes mean fewer affordable choices for consumers.
After being stationed overseas for decades & coming back to Singapore, I honestly feel the difference much more strongly. It’s disappointing to see how much some of the choices I used to take for granted have changed.
Singapore is a diverse society, & I believe we should continue respecting everyone - while also making sure that no group feels that their everyday choices are being gradually taken away.
