We continue the major rebuild of the OM642 diesel engine removed from a Mercedes-Benz GL 350. After disassembly and inspection, the crankshaft, cylinders and other major internal components were carefully checked. • Fortunately, the crankshaft did not require machining or major repair, so we can now move on to the assembly process. • One of the first major steps is installing the crankshaft into the engine block using new main bearings, new thrust half-rings and new crankshaft main bearing bolts. • The engine is being assembled using standard main bearing shells appropriate for the condition and dimensions of the crankshaft. Before installation, all bearing surfaces and mating surfaces are carefully cleaned and prepared. • In this video, I’ll show the complete process of installing the crankshaft into the OM642 engine block, fitting the new main bearings and thrust washers, and preparing the bottom end for final tightening. • Engine assembly requires precision, cleanliness and strict adherence to the correct procedure.
