@stephenpetro411: One student trained until he could remember 106 digits—but when researchers replaced the digits with words, his memory became completely ordinary again. He hadn’t developed a powerful general memory. He had developed one extremely specialized skill. This is the problem with “brain training”: improvement often stays trapped inside the exact activity being practiced. If you want to become a better writer, write. If you want to reason under pressure, practice reasoning under pressure. Practice doesn’t make you better at everything. It makes you better at what you repeatedly do. #LearningScience #BrainTraining #Psychology #SelfImprovement #Booktok

In any case, IQ doesn't measure intelligence. It basically measures the ability to score high on IQ tests.

The best way to gauge intelligence is true common sense intelligence, resourcefulness, plus an added dash of emotional intelligence.

The thing is, some skills rely on exact rep practice and some people are built for that. Golf rewards obsessive precise repetition one can repeat on the tourney course while sprinting and long jump don't care how often you practice. piano rewards autism level practice, portrait painting does not. practice makes darts more accurate, but joke telling remains elusive

Assumption: AI will move us forward. It knows already about everything, so just ask and use it as a super tutor and super mentor always available. You just set your goals now and the one or more of the available AI will guide you further in general and after some troubleshooting you will usually get a good answer and good to very good solution. You can use your IQ and experience then to better stear the AI in the directions you want. Your own IQ becomes probably less important in this scenario.

Maybe not “meaningfully”, but at least somewhat, right? If a student gets good at reasoning in a math class by reading dense math texts, that will to some extent bleed over into a better ability to follow a logic argument in a philosophy course. I know because I was that student. And when a player improved in one sport, there’s a good chance some of those improvements could translate to another sport they play. Also, Rubik’s cubes are definitely a niche thing, but they’re fun and make someone feel smart and maybe even inspire them to pursue and conquer other puzzles once they see that they can do it. I feel like the passion/interest/confidence that can be inspired/gained through some of these activities isn’t being emphasized enough by the studies. It’s not just about pure capacity/ability. But these are good points, thank you.

There are some reasoning skills that transfer, like reading and writing and working on math or physics problems. They will generally improve reasoning, but not as fast and as broadly as people looking for hacks might like

I think some specific skill need narrow learning whereas other may help you develop general skills for example if you practiced one type of sport you automatically get better at other different sports which share few things with it. this is transfer learning
