@dr.michaelschaake: Some people get cavities and other people tend to build up tarter, then there is everyone in the middle that does a little bit of both. Is there actually something to this or is the dentist just suffering from confirmation bias? I looked at the literature to bring you the information you need to know so that you can decide for yourself. I am a clinical dentist and I’ll be honest: I see this all the time. Of course, it’s not a hard and fast rule, but this is a phenomenon that we see. I think that if you are a patient who is experiencing this, it’s good to be aware of the basic chemistry that is going on in your mouth so that your can talk to your dentist about changes that may need to be made or treatment you made need. Thanks for watching! #dentistry #periodontitis #periodontology #cavities #oralhealth
I've heard xylitol is really good for boosting your mouth's PH and reducing the risk of cavities. Is there any food/supplement that is recommended for preventing tartar forming?

there seem to be toothpastes designed to reduce tartar buildup do they make sense? Any ingredients that are proven to mitigate tartar?
Does hydroxyapatite toothpaste affect tartar buildup?

Ok- hygienist here. I have noticed that people who have a ton of calc build up but moderately healthy the first thing I ask is: do you eat a ton of protein? And literally ALWAYS… I am correct- they are getting about 150 grams + a day. Anyone else?!? But idk how to explain it

My usually cavity -free patients start getting cavities when they develop food traps and don’t follow my advice.

I have said to patients for years that get a lot of cavities but low build up that they have a super acidic mouth and vis versa for build up with no cavities tend to have naturally more basic ph, glad to know science backs me. Always follow up with it’s not their fault, just the way their body works! I think swishing with water often throughout the day helps dilute the pH back to neutral which works for both acidic and basic pts.. not a cure for either but it’s something and easy!

I have a more acidic mouth, and I will be getting additional fillings quite soon. Lol. Also, I hadn't had a cleaning in years and the hygienist was shocked by how little tarter build up I had on my lower fronts.

I am a 40+ year old Hygienist. I get calculus so fast, and I know what to do to clean my teeth. There is always a little bit in there, I can't imagine what it would be like if I didn't use my Sonicare and floss. Oh, and I have zero cavities/restorations.

Is anyone working on a chemical solution that dissolves calculus without affecting other oral tissues?

I’ve kind of noticed that I’m patient either they have periodontal disease mostly or they have cavities mostly but never both in extreme. I had a patient the other day tons of cavities, but the burial condition was fine.

You think by flossing more and using a water flosser in addition would help get rid of plaque before it hardens into calculus?

Can you talk about how the bacteria in our mouths are contagious? Like we often see married patients have similar perio issues or similar decay (the decay is probably because they both eat the same stuff)

Here’s something I’ve always thought about. People that have more cavities have a lower ph and people that have buildup have a more basic ph. Can this be used to help predict if a person leans more towards having cancer or heart disease? Because (anecdotally) my family has a hx of heart disease (calc buildup in the heart) and gets tartar buildup on our teeth. But we don’t have hx of cavities OR cancer in our family. Also, cancer (or the tissue surrounding a tumor) is more acidic.
