Why do some people fail to see that Emily was manipulative and controlling? The simple fact that Lorelai owed her money gave Emily leverage to force her daughter to do things her way. Emily had plenty of time to make amends with Lorelai and try to understand her; had she made even the slightest effort to do so, she wouldn't have been so obsessed with getting that check. Emily would always choose having Lorelai in her debt over seeing her daughter truly free.
