the family tree is even worse btw, the show doesn't elaborate that much, but Daemon and Viserys's parents are siblings (Baelon+Alyssa) and their grandparents are siblings (Jaehaerys+Alysanne) and their great grandparents are cousins (Aenys+Alyssa Velaryon) and their great great grandparents are siblings (Aegon the conqueror+Rhaenys) Haley Whipjack made a video mapping out their family tree on youtube, it's great (the video is great, not the incest)

the targaryens are partly inspired by the ptolemaic dynasty in egypt, who frequently married siblings as well as other family members together! they did this to keep the bloodline ‘pure’, to preserve power, and to mimic the egyptian gods!
