Today, I opened the gate. And twenty deer went home. Twenty. Twenty tiny, helpless babies that I once carried in through my door—some frightened, some fragile, some sick or injured, all of them needing someone to carry them when they couldn’t make it on their own. Today, I carried them back out. Only they aren’t tiny anymore. They are big. Strong. Beautiful. And most importantly… wild. Today they breathed deep, filling their lungs with the cool, fresh air of the forest that has been waiting for them. Their feet touched the earth they were born to walk upon. Their noses lifted to smells they instinctively knew. And somewhere inside each of those beautiful bodies, a wild heart beat with an innate need that I could never—and would never want to—replace. Go. Run. Disappear into the trees. Fill your bellies with the things the forest grows for you. Feel rain on your backs and sunshine warming your faces. Learn every creek, every ridge, every hidden place beneath the trees. Live the life you were always supposed to live. And maybe you’ll never think of me again. Maybe the bottles, the late-night checks, the medicine, the worry, the sound of my voice and the hands that held you will simply fade away as the wild takes its rightful place. That is what I raised you for. But a selfish little piece of my heart hopes that maybe… years from now… on some quiet morning in the forest, something familiar will stir inside you. And maybe, just for a moment, you’ll remember me. I hope somehow you know that I loved you. I loved you enough to fight for you when you were helpless. I loved you enough to spend months preparing you for a world without me. And today, I loved you enough to let you go. Twenty deer came through my door needing a second chance. Today, twenty strong, wild deer walked back out of it and returned to the place where they have always belonged. I should feel nothing but happiness. And I am proud. More proud than I can put into words. But tonight, the enclosures are quiet. My routine suddenly has twenty fewer faces waiting for me. And there is an emptiness here that only another wildlife rehabilitator could truly understand. This is the goal. This is the victory. And somehow, it still feels a little like heartbreak. Go be wild, my babies. The forest has you now. And I will carry the memory of all twenty of you long after your hoofprints disappear. 🤎
