When they told me those “honk if you love ___” stickers were so if you honked at them they thought it was for pizza. I was shocked I thought they genuinely wanted ppl to honk if they liked pizza.

they wouldn't be called skills if they were that common, some of them are intuitive but most of them are learnt and exercised

I am not autistic but I was severely depressed during my early teens and missed crucial social skills because of it and developed severe social anxiety. I was literally sobbing and hyperventilating about calling a Pizzeria we go to every week.

common sense come with fucking EXPERIENCE. people forget that common sense isn't something that automatically appears in your head. in some countries, common sense dictates arriving at a meeting five minutes early, because being late is considered impolite. in other countries, it is considered sensible to arrive half an hour late so as not to put "pressure" on the other person or rush them. If this were—fucking—a matter of common sense (which has nothing to do with social etiquette and, by extension, social skills), then that common sense would be the same all over the planet. we wouldn't have misunderstandings and conflicts where a japanese person suggests to an eastern european that they meet up sometime later, and the latter takes it seriously (for example).

Not only “lack of empathy” but factually incorrect. Individuals with Asperger’s (although not that term anymore) often have a higher IQ than average but significantly lack in social skills.

"common sense" and "obviously" are dirty words in my household. Nothing is universal knowledge and assuming it is breeds confusion and unnecessary friction

lol I was homeschooled, most of my socialization was at conservative churches, and I am absolutely some type of neurodivergent. Am friendly. Am personable. But my social skills are… well, odd. 😆 So yeah. Not at all common sense 😆

Let me tell u a secret… everyone was bad at this and practiced with mean/cruel peers in our middle/high school. But, most of GenZ lost that time and never got the chance to practice.

If social skills were common sense they’d be universal but the right and wrong thing to do in a given social situation differ massively between cultures

more people need to realize that it's two words - common and sense. some of us can't sense them! they're on a different wavelength than what autistic people can see!

You don’t even have to have autism to struggle with socializing. I was homeschooled my entire life and anytime I tried to have a friend outside my family they would get picked apart to until I was 17 I majority only interacted with my family and ts happens more often than you think.

It’s literally all made up, and completely different in every culture. There are some cultures find eye contact disrespectful in certain contexts.

lol being autistic is an actual curse lol. You can’t do basic social functioning without a bunch of social skill groups that make you feel like a child at best and a monster at worst.

Scout Starmuffin :
You shouldn’t feel bad if social skills don’t come naturally to you. You should feel bad if you refuse to learn, do better or take accountability.
