@weatherprofessor: New: The Ocean just had its warmest day on record, ~2°F warmer than it was just 4 decades ago. On Saturday Aug 22nd the ocean surface reached an average temp of 70.1°F, 1°C higher than 40 years ago in the 1980s. This is due in part to the Super El Nino, on top of the longterm climate warming trend. The average warming rate of our entire ocean surface is about .5°F per decade. That’s mainly because 90% of the excess heat now being trapped in the Earth system is stored there. Why is the Earth storing extra heat? It starts with excess heat-trapping greenhouse gases, then add in warming feedbacks which allow more sunlight to be absorbed like loss of reflective ice and loss of reflective low clouds, and also the unmasking of warming due to recent pollution reductions and more sun reaching the surface.
