Martin had been to Tsukiji Fish Market years ago back when it was Tokyo's active fish market. Wholesale fish commerce has since moved to the new Toyosu Market, but the Tsukiji Outer Market is still densely packed with food stalls and small shops selling everything from sushi to swords. Since it was Jess's first time in Tokyo, we decided to check it out. For all the amazing food we had in Japan, this was the most underwhelming. Not that any of it was bad, but much of the food we had here was unmemorable. The two standouts out of what we tried were the tamagoyaki and the onigiri. Looking around, most people eating here seemed to be foreigners. That contributed to a feeling that the modern Tsukiji Outer Market is a bit of a tourist trap. That being said, we passed on a lot of other food that looked and smelled really good, so it might have come down to the decisions we made. If you're only in Tokyo for a very short time and want to try a wide variety of different Japanese street foods, it could still be worth a visit.
