@dorahmwima: Yes!!! Caesarean sections save lives… we are definitely not going to argue about that🤗 But you see, Turkey right now is having a very interesting maternal-health conversation. Around 6 in every 10 births have been happening through C-section which makes it one of the highest rates among OECD countries. What I forgot to mention in my video is that Turkey is as well facing another major concern: women are having fewer children. In 2001, the average woman in Turkey had about 2.38 children. By 2025, that had fallen to just 1.42 children per woman. Their crude birth rate has also almost HALVED from 20.3 births per 1,000 people in 2001 to 10.4 in 2025. And for the last nine years, Turkey’s fertility rate has remained below the 2.1 replacement level needed for a population to replace itself. Now, does this mean C-sections caused Turkey’s falling fertility?🤔🤔🤔 Well, fertility decline is a very complex conversation that we shall tackle another day. But Turkey’s government is looking at BOTH issues and asking whether unnecessary C-sections, repeat surgery and their possible effects on future pregnancies could be added to the equation. Now I personally believe the Zalila Gwanga Community here in Uganda should be watching this closely. Because our challenge is different!!! Some women may be having interventions or C-sections they didn’t truly need in some urban facilities. while somewhere else, another woman who desperately needs an emergency C-section is struggling to even access one in time. So I believe conversations should move from being anti-C-section to: necessity, access, informed consent and accountability. Now my question is, should Uganda start publishing the C-section rates of individual hospitals? And if you had a C-section, were you clearly told WHY it was necessary?
