In its earliest and most literal linguistic phase, trans- applies strictly to physical geography, objects, or bodies moving across an explicit distance or space. As the prefix adapted to describe processes, it moved from changing locations to changing conditions. In this second increment, the prefix alters the internal form, shape, or ownership of a subject. The "crossing" is no longer done by a body moving through space, but by an object crossing from one state of being to another. Trans-mutare (To cross from one element/nature to another → Transmute) In its most advanced linguistic increment, trans- leaves the physical world entirely. It applies to metaphysical concepts, abstract boundaries, laws, or human limitations. Here, "across" becomes synonymous with "exceeding," "surpassing," or "violating" an invisible line. ALSO I DO NOT KNOW? I’ve heard people kind of talk about this a little bit, but I don’t actually understand the underlying issue…. But it feels really important….. I don’t know if this is even a relevance, but I learned about the middle passage when I was researching the place where I remember having my first memory - it was at the science discovery museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, when i was 2. I was also born there - but I learned that at that time they had the middle passage presenting on spirit Square …. Right there at the science discovery museum …. But I couldn’t find too much else on it. I wonder if that may be connected to the deep connection i’ve always felt with the Swahili language, like Uganda, Yemen / omen, egypt, and just africa period
