@russian_explorer: I’m going to show you one of my favourite Russian cities – Kirovsk! It is surrounded on all sides by the Khibiny Mountains and offers the ultimate immersion in the atmosphere of the Far North. The history of Kirovsk dates back to the 1920s with the construction of a mine and a processing plant. Originally, the town was called Khibinogorsk, but it was renamed in 1934. Today, Kirovsk is home to the large «Apatit» mining and processing plant, which specialises in the production of phosphate ore. The town’s activities are not limited to this single plant; it is also an important tourist centre in the region. The «Bolshoy Vudyavr» ski resort is one of the most popular in the country, whilst excursions and hikes in the mountains, visits to the town’s attractions and hunting for the Northern Lights are in considerable demand amongst tourists. Whenever I have visited Russia (pre 2022) it is a prevalent site to see that the population tend to live in apartments. One would think, with all that land at their disposal, individual dwellings would prevaricate. I wonder if it is because they are easier to heat that way, because of the harsh Russian winters?
