@the_london_spy: The Jolly Roger is the most famous pirate flag. The skull and cross bones came from the symbol used in ships' logs, where it represented death on board. It was first used on a pirate flag around 1700 and quickly became popular. The title Jolly Roger is thought to come from the French phrase "joli rouge" which means "pretty red". The flag was captured in battle off the North African coast in 1780 by Lt Richard Curry, who later became an admiral. The flag is on show at the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Pirates being called "swashbuckling" is actually not correct "swashbuckler" literally comes from 16th-century brawlers banging their swords ("swash") against a small round shield ("buckler") just to make noise and act tough. It was originally an insult for a loudmouth thug, real pirates didn’t even use bucklers—blame Hollywood for turning brutal outlaws into fancy fencing heroes.
