@thetrishawolfe: It can feel confusing to recognize the ways that we did not get met as children. We can have had a good childhood or felt loved in some ways and still have experienced misattunement, attachment ruptures, etc. it’s often hard to recognize ways our environment may have negatively impacted us, but the truth is all of us come out of childhood with specific learnings about what our roles are where we get our value from and how we should behave in the world. These learning is impact the way we relate to ourselves and others, and what we believe is possible. And we develop strategies as a result that might look like intellectualization, perfectionism, people, pleasing, over functioning, etc. exploring this doesn’t mean you have to put your parents on trial or to discover that you actually had a bad childhood but instead, it means getting curious about what you learned about the world and examining if that is true in the present and if it’s serving you now. #developmentaltrauma #emotionallyimmatureparents #experientialtherapy #intellectualization #overthinking

I am the best (or worst depending on how we look at it) intellectualiser I have ever met (I even studied psychology and sociology for 10 years to reinforce my skills) and I have never lived any classical « trauma » but just exactly what you are saying in that video: I grew up an only child to 2 traumatised parents who decided not to reproduce their traumatic childhood but without having any emotional skills at all (they certainly did their best and I am not the worst one to feel sorry for). They were present, they have always loved the idea of me (the concept of their child) unconditionally and they could die or give up anything for me without even thinking twice about it but they never showed me love, they never hugged me, they never told me they loved me, I always knew they couldn’t deal with any emotion so I had to keep mine hidden as a child (and felt shame) and they never got interested in me or who I was, they were just happy to have a perfect child who would theoretically do better than them in life and be happier and who should love them (even though they were sad I was not a loving and affectionate child lol).
