Hello from Barcelona. What’s going on with the Iran of TikTok where you only see modernly dressed women on luxury shopping trips and it seems men have disappeared? It’s real, but heavily filtered: these are images from the richest malls in northern Tehran, where the algorithm shows an aesthetic that hides the rest of the country. Men are still there, they just stay out of frame. The image of these women without the veil in Western clothes is an act of peaceful protest. Since 2022 they have won a de facto freedom on the streets through sheer courage. But the laws haven’t changed and the pressure continues. To avoid mass protests the regime uses AI and cameras to fine women from a distance and, above all, threatens shop owners with closing their businesses if they let unveiled women in. This forces the merchants themselves to act as “police.” Behind TikTok’s modern façade there’s a tough daily struggle: women fighting for every metre of freedom against a system that tries to control them even through the doors of the shops.

Hola des de Barcelona. Què passa a l’Iran de TikTok on només es veuen dones vestides de modern anant de compres de luxe i sembla que els homes hagin desaparegut? És real, però molt filtrat: són imatges dels centres comercials més rics del nord de Teheran, on l’algorisme ens mostra una estètica que amaga la resta del país. Els homes hi són, però queden fora de pla. La imatge d’aquestes dones sense vel amb roba occidental és un acte de protesta pacífica. Des del 2022 han conquerit una llibertat de fet als carrers a força de valentia. Però les lleis no han canviat i la pressió continua. El règim, per evitar protestes massives, utilitza IA i càmeres per multar a distància i, sobretot, amenaça els botiguers de tancar-los el local si deixen entrar dones sense vel. Així obliga els mateixos comerciants a fer de “policia”. Darrere la façana moderna de TikTok hi ha un pols diari duríssim: les dones lluiten cada metre de llibertat contra un sistema que les controla fins a les portes dels comerços.
