I’m in the U.S., and find that people here have confusion about the difference between the concepts of race and ethnicity. It seems like most Americans treat ethnicities as subsets of races, so they talk about “White ethnicities” or “Black ethnicities” etc, or they use ethnicity most comfortably to distinguish kinds of European people (French-American, Irish-American, etc) but usually lump all Asians or Africans and other non-white together into races and seem a bit befuddled by the idea that there are people of African ancestry who are culturally French or English etc. There’s also a strong tendency to treat ethnicity as traceable by biological ancestry. It all seems to show how powerful racial thinking is in American culture that cultural differences are subsumed under supposed racial difference.

those costructs do shape us, through ethnic "culture", customs, religion and education. I tend to think about children of one ethnicity adopted and raised by another with similar racial features. where do the differences come from? the ways children are brought up, educated, given a certain ethics code in the name of "nation" and "country".
