@tylerallison92: Heavy duty mechanic is one of the higher paying jobs around the oilfield, especially at the oil sands sites in Fort McMurray. Trades in the oilfield are a great career path. Make big money early on, get plenty of hours and the skill is transferable if you ever decide to live/work in other areas. The apprenticeship program can look like this for the in class portion: Level 1: 10 weeks Level 2: 8 weeks Level 3: 6 weeks Level 4: 5 weeks Complete that over 4 years and you come out with money in your pocket and a high paying job… although nothing is guaranteed and you probably have to be a top mechanic to be cracking $200k.

My husband has a grade 10 education and a very long criminal record from his late teens to early 20's. He got into crushing as a labourer maybe 15 years ago and now clears 200k as a superintendent. He works a 28/14 rotation, so basically a 2 week break every other month. I won't take away how hard he works and his rotations definitely get tough on the tail end but a guy like him was never going to get a university degree and frankly I think a desk job where he has to write passive aggressive emails all day long would make him suicidal. His record has never held him back in his career but sometimes his company has to ask if he'll be allowed into a mine. No mine has ever said no though. He's been able to travel all over Canada to some extremely remote locations, he's walked on glaciers, he's taken helicopters to work. White collar jobs aren't for everybody and are rarely as financially rewarding as these remote jobs.

They pay great because you work 12hr days 7 days a week, 2 of your days off are travel days, so you only really get 5 days off, you work in the middle of nowhere away from friends and family, it's hard on the body and most guys get out in their 40's cause their bodies are broken
